Joaquín Martínez López
MD, PhD (President and Co-founder)
Dr. Joaquín Martínez-López who graduated in Medicine from the University of Granada in 1991, is the Head of the Haematology department at Hospital 12 de Octubre, Director of the Haematological Malignancies Research Unit at the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO) and Professor at Universidad Complutense of Madrid. He has more than 200 publications in international peer-reviewed journals and belongs to the main international working groups of Myeloma, Lymphoma and other haematological cancers.
PhD (CEO and Co-Founder)
Dr. Santiago Barrio, who graduated in Biochemistry and has a Master in Biophysics and a PhD in Biomedicine from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid, developed the applications for MRD monitoring during his PhD in the group of Dr. Joaquín Martínez-López. After five years of excellent post-doctoral research at the Mayo Clinic (USA) and the Wuerzburg University Clinic (Germany), Santiago returned to Spain to manage the start-up of this innovative business.

Dr. Luis Paz-Ares, who graduated in Medicine from the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid in 1986, is Head of the Oncology Department at Hospital 12 de Octubre since 2015 and Professor at the Universidad Complutense of Madrid since 2014. In addition to an extensive research activity with more than 250 scientific publications, he is a member of the main oncology societies, scientific committees and national and international working groups.
Rosa Ayala Díaz
(Co-Founder and Medical Director – Haematological Tumours)
Dr. Rosa Ayala who graduated in Medicine from the University of Salamanca in 1992, is the Head of the Molecular Biology Laboratory at Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid, where she combines her work with patients with an intense research activity with more than 200 scientific publications and communications in journals and international conferences. Her research in recent years has laid the foundations for the technology offered by Altum.
Yanira Ruiz Herida
(Account manager and R&D Director)
Industrial PhD in Medicine from Universidad Complutense (Madrid). It was focused on the development and implementation of novel experimental and data analysis protocols based on NGS and ex-vivo drug profiling for hematological malignancies. Prior to her role in Altum, she spent 4 years in a biotech where she was responsible for scientific and technological strategy, as well as leading pharma partnership.
Laura Rufián Vázquez
Technical specialist in clinical diagnostic laboratory. She has participated in numerous projects of different research groups at Hospital 12 de Octubre, using and improving her knowledge in many innovative techniques. She works in the Translational Hematology Laboratory at Hospital 12 de Octubre since 2019, where she is responsible for NGS projects as well as for laboratory management.
Jaime Carrillo García
PhD (Project Manager)
Dr. Jaime Carrillo, who graduated in Biology from the University of Jaén and PhD in Biomedicine from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, has been linked to Altum as project manager to develop and coordinate new MRD studies. He was specialized in molecular diagnosis of different human pathologies and identification of new therapeutic targets during his pre and post-doctoral research. Moreover, he has worked in different biotechnological companies, developing kits for molecular diagnosis, identifying genetic alterations by NGS and offering scientific counseling for analysis of NGS data.
PhD (Project Manager)
Chemistry Graduate. Biochemistry Graduate. Molecular Biology PhD by the Universidad Autónoma of Madrid. Clinical Biochemistry Specialist. He started his research work studying two proteins involved in DNA repair by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance at Spanish Cancer Research Center (CNIO). Later, he prepared the Clinical Biochemistry training at Hospital 12 de Octubre and he is working as specialist in Molecular Onco-hematology since 2015. He has participated in several NGS research projects and is author or co-author of more than 20 international publications.
Juan Manuel Rosa
MD in Biology 2003 (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), PhD in Molecular Biology in 2009 (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid), did a first post-doctoral stay in the ICR in London. Back in Spain, worked in a private company (Sistemas Genómicos S.L.) as bioinformatician. Moved back to the public health system to introduce cancer genomics and bioinformatics analysis in the Pathology Department of Hospital Ramón y Cajal (Madrid). Currently working in the Molecular Haematology group in Hospital 12 de Octubre (Madrid).
Luis Domínguez Moreno
(Strategic and Financial Advisor)
Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Universidad Complutense of Madrid and MBA Executive from IE Business School. Luis has a 9-year experience as Finance Director in two companies, with subsidiaries abroad and including responsibilities in several areas such as HHRR, Warehouse, IT and Purchase. Currently, and for 8 years, he has been working in the Business Accelerator & Incubator of UC3M University Science Park, giving strategic and financial advice for its technological startups and spin-offs, including searching for public and prívate funding.
