Madrid-based startup Altum Sequencing has patented a technology to monitor cancer during treatment and detect signs of relapse before they appear on conventional tests, using circulating tumour DNA analysis combined with AI algorithms. Founded in late 2019 by physicians Joaquín Martínez, Rosa Ayala and Luis Paz-Ares (Hospital 12 de Octubre), alongside CEO Marina Planas, the company is closing a €5 million funding round — with venture capital firms joining for the first time — to complete its international expansion and advance the regulatory process in Europe and the US. The technology has been tested across 23 cancer types, though the current focus is on haematological cancers and breast cancer, where a recent study showed the ability to anticipate relapses years ahead of conventional methods. To date, Altum has raised close to €2.7 million and has a team of 16 people.
